These feather pens are a collaboration with artist John Underhill from Ottawa, Illinois. John begins by selecting feathers for color, pattern, and quality. He then meticulously arranges and adheres them around a brass tube using a proprietary technique. The tube is cast in clear polyester resin, permanently preserving the feathers inside. Joe Aliperti turns the resulting blanks to shape on a wood lathe and polishes them to a high gloss. Suitable hardware components are chosen to complete the pen.
The refractive nature of clear resin makes the feathers appear on the surface of the pen, and magnifies the texture and depth. These pens are an excellent choice for a birder, hunter, fly-fisherman, or anyone fascinated by the intricate beauty of feathers.
